Of Wind and Water is based on a verse from the Bhagavad Gita, “which suggests that the movement of our senses among the sense objects is similar to the wind carrying a ship across the waters.” The piece is very free in nature, but picks up momentum driving toward the climax before dying down to the tranquility of the beginning.

Program Notes

Commissioned by marimbist Michael Burritt, Of Wind and Water is based on a verse from the Bhagavad Gita, “which suggests that the movement of our senses among the sense objects is similar to the wind carrying a ship across the waters.” Hollinden makes use of several advanced four-mallet techniques, such as independent rolls, close interval sticking, dead strokes, and so on. The piece is very free in nature, but picks up momentum driving toward the climax before dying down to the tranquility of the beginning. You can hear a recording of this piece on Michael Burritt’s second CD, “Shadow Chasers” (also available from C. Alan).
