Program Notes
This piece evokes images of a wandering band of minstrels entertaining the crowds at a fair in the Middle Ages. With a simple, minor mode melody, stately fanfare-like figures and plenty of percussion, this piece has something for everyone in the band.

The Middle Ages was generally considered to be the period from 1066 to 1485. A fair (often spelt “fayre” in the 15th to 17th centuries) was an important part of life, functioning as a place for people to buy and sell goods, as well as being a meeting place and form of entertainment. Many medieval fairs were held annually to mark the “feast day” of a patron saint to whom a particular church had been dedicated.
