Program Notes
The 1960s were a time of intense competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. Both countries were striving to be the first to put someone on the moon. The Soviet Union had early success when in 1961 they had the first man in space - Yuri Gagarin. However, on July 20, 1969 the United States became the first country to successfully land 2 men on the moon – Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, as part of the Apollo 11 mission. Race to the Moon is a bright, majestic piece whose fanfare-like qualities remind me of the excitement and adventure of being an Astronaut or Cosmonaut blasting off aboard a giant rocket into space.
