Program Notes
Republica was commissioned by the Extra Curricular Activities Branch of Ministry of Education for the 1997 Singapore Youth Festival.
The work embraces musical ideas found in some of the more serious folk songs and popular songs of Singapore that celebrate nationhood and a sense of community. The composer has attempted to capture the spirit and celebration of nationhood that is evident in Singapore and this work is a musical reflection of his links with colleagues and friends in that country.
