Program Notes
This composition is based on the Australian folk song "Streets of Forbes". Forbes is a country town in New South Wales situated around the Lachlan river and was home to the Bushranger Ben Hall. On May 5th 1865, at the age of 28, Ben Hall was shot dead by police. His body was then paraded through the streets of Forbes. This piece aims to capture the spirit of adventure and the tragedy associated with this story. Some account credit the lyrics to Hall's brother-in-law John McGuire who was an eyewitness to the gruesome procession.
