Program Notes
The goldfields of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, are the setting for this exciting work. The story of the Eureka Stockade tells of the conflict between the authorities and the miners over the payment of taxes for their mines. On Sunday December 3, 1854, armed soldiers attacked the miners who had fortified the area around the Eureka Hotel. This was the first time on Australian soil that men had fought and died together under their own flag. Musically, Gold! represents those tensions, but not the battle itself. Throughout the music there is a sense of perpetual motion, reflecting the industry of the miners and the excitement of the time. The music of the late 19th Century is reflected in the harmonic language and the ambivalence of key is intended to underline the feeling of unease and tension felt between the gold miners and the authorities.
