Program Notes
Tchaikovsky composed his "Sixteen Songs for Children" in the autumn of 1883. This work is known variously as The Legend, Legend and Legend: Christ Had a Garden, and is the fifth song in the set. The composer arranged the work for voice and orchestra in 1884, and for unaccompanied chorus in 1899.

The song's narrative sees the Christ child fashioning garlands of roses for his friends as they play in his garden. Finally, he sets about making one for himself, and finding there are no flowers left, makes and wears a small crown of thorns.
