Program Notes
The Scherzo, from Symphony for Wind Orchestra, was completed on commision from the Churchlands Senior High School in Perth, Western Australia. It premiered at the Australian Society of Music Education's National Conference in Perth in 1993. It was incorporated into the broader Symphony as part of an organic compositional process over the 2 years from mid 1992 until mid 1994.
Scherzo is an energentic work that produces a sense of foreboding and urgency. There dramatic, grand and lyrical themes intertwining to form a work of substancial complexity but with an assured satisfaction awaiting the ensembles that rise to meet its challenges.
