Program Notes

Assurance was commissioned by the Huron Music Association of Huron High School to honor Stephen E. Roberts, Director of Bands, upon his retirement. Most of the melodic material of the work is derived from one of Steve Roberts’ favorite hymns, Blessed Assurance. The word “assurance” is paramount to understanding the meaning and intent of this piece. The definition of the word “assurance” renders such synonyms as “confidence,” “promise,” “bond”, and “commitment.” All of these are apropos descriptions of Steve Roberts as a person and as director of bands at Huron High School. Each section of the piece alludes to some of these admirable characteristics.
