Inspired by the brass choir music of Gabrieli, Canzona is a mono-thematic work that has been masterfully crafted with counterpoint, rhythmic development, and triumphant returns.
Program Notes
Canzona was inspired by the brass choir music of Gabrieli and early music in general. The entire piece is based on one melody, which is first heard in a stately manner at the beginning. After two statements, a fast development section ensues. In this section, the melody is developed rhythmically and contrapuntally. This section builds in intensity until finally, the theme triumphantly returns in its original form. Just when the music seems to settle, a fast and exciting coda ends the piece in a whirlwind of notes.
