From Whence They Came

From Whence They Came
Gilreath, Leslie
From Whence They Came is an impression of the totality of the West African migration experience and subsequent influence, establishment and celebration of Gullah culture. Rather than attempt to build a historical timeline, it paints a picture that is more of the sum of the experiences along the way to the rich Gullah heritage resulting from the slave trade into Charleston, SC. From soulful aching to musical celebration and an eventual integration of experiences, the piece is a moving documentary on the experience that was and is Charleston Gullah.
